Skunks

Treatments for this pest are included in these services:

Skunks need no introduction, because they stink—literally. Their main defense is an ability to spray a noxious, foul-smelling liquid with remarkable precision up to 15 feet away. This liquid is secreted from their anal glands and is composed of a sulfur mixture that is extremely difficult to remove.

As relatives to badgers, skunks commonly dig holes in gardens with their long, sharp nails and lawns in search of grubs and bugs. Skunks feed on everything from insects, earthworms, and lizards to fruit, vegetables, and garbage.

How to Identify Skunks

  • Appearance – Skunks typically have black fur with a white stripe across their backs. They can also be brown, cream, or grey colored.
  • Size – Range in size from about 3 to 15 pounds and range from just less than 1 foot to a foot and a half in length.
  • Nest Locations – Skunks build dens in gardens, underneath decks, beneath woodpiles, and below building foundations.

How to Prevent Skunks

Just because you smell a skunk doesn’t mean that you’ve got a skunk infestation, as skunk spray is potent and can linger even on a skunk passing through. However, if you find 3-to-4-inch cone-shaped holes on your property that may indicate that you have a skunk problem.

Like other small mammals, the best way to prevent skunks is to prevent them from getting into your property and removing reasons for them to poke around in the first place. Be sure to patch any holes in your foundation and remove potential sites for den building. Also, ensure that your garbage cans are securely closed.
