Cockroaches are notoriously hard to exterminate for a do-it-yourselfer, so it’s advisable to hire a trusted pest control professional to deal with these insects. Cockroaches carry diseases and infest stored food, which spreads these diseases, through their excrement.

What You Should Know About a Cockroach Infestation

Cockroaches are not a structural pest in that they do not do physical damage to buildings or surroundings; however, they can be a significant health concern and a difficult nuisance.

Cockroaches can contaminate food products with their bodies or their waste products; they may also leave a disturbing odor in areas where infestation has taken place. Foraging cockroaches can also be vectors of disease, depositing germs or bacteria in areas that they infest and causing attacks of asthma in some people prone to reactions to cockroaches.

Are cockroaches dangerous?

Because they are drawn to human food, cockroaches are a cause of food contamination. Cockroaches both defecate and regurgitate on the food that they eat. While this is disgusting on its own, it also spreads bacteria and parasites that may be living inside them. Some of the dangers of cockroaches in this regard include bacterial infections. A bacterium called Pseudomonas aeruginosa is particularly found in cockroaches and can be transmitted to humans. Salmonella can also be spread by cockroaches, contributing to diseases ranging from food poisoning to typhoid.

How do cockroaches get in?

In order to prevent roaches from accessing a home, entrances by which the roaches can find their way inside should be searched out and sealed off. This includes cracks in foundations, gaps in window and door seals, holes in walls, and uncovered vents.

Due to their body size and shape, cockroaches can squeeze through small or flat gaps that can escape notice at first glance. A thorough check should be made once or twice a year in order to ensure that no new gaps and cracks have occurred that can let cockroaches inside.
